Last night we decided to give Two a try. Chef David Gingrass decided it was time to re-invent his Hawthorne Lane restaurant. The result is Two, a warm and inviting space with some tasty menu items located in SoMa. The name derives from the fact that the restaurant has two chefs, and it's the second restaurant at 22 Hawthorne Lane.
I, Jose, have eaten at this restaurant several times for lunch and actually have enjoyed it quite a bit. It was with that positive review that I suggested to Kelly and Todd that we give it a try. We started off with a bottle of Skylark Syrah, which I must say was fantastic. For dinner, Kelly ordered a roasted butternut squash, aged gouda, double-smoked bacon, and fried sage pizza. Todd had the cast iron pan half chicken with garlic and Red Flame grape chutney. Finally, I had the grilled Sonoma lamb loin with roasted figs, potato puree, and pistachio pesto.
Overall, the menu items sounded great. So we started with a nice menu and great wine..... And then we waited (note the restaurant was fairly empty but they claimed there was a private group in the back room). It took about 40 to 50 minutes from order to arrival of the food. Had it arrived perfect it would have been forgiven. My lamb was overcooked and did not have great flavor. Todd thought his chicken was pretty good. Kelly enjoyed her pizza at first, but then it made her feel a bit ill.
So overall, I would say skip for dinner, good for lunch.
