Thoughts on Dec Retail Numbers

I (Kelly) have been working in the retail industry for 12+ years now and saw a few of the holiday (December) numbers post this morning(all comp stores):
  • Costco  -4%
  • Target  -4.1%
  • American Eagle Outfitters -17%
  • Saks -19.8%
  • Neiman Marcus Group Inc. -27.5%
  • JCPenney - 8.1%
  • Gap -14%
  • Abercrombie & Fitch -24%
  • Macy's -4%
  • Limited Brands -10%
  • Pacific Sunwear -10%
  • Wet Seal -12.5%
  • Chico's -12.4%
  • Sears Holdings -7.3%
A few bright spots, which in today's economy means flat or no decrease.
  • Wal-Mart +1.7% (excludes the impact of declining gas pump prices)
  • Aeropostale +12%
  • The Children's Place Retail Stores 0%
  • Ross Stores 0%
  • Hot Topic +4.3%
While there are a few bright spots, it is clear that everyone at all economic levels has stopped spending or perhaps Americans are finally realizing that they need to live within their means.  Whatever the reason, the retail industry will need to forge ahead with yet another dramatic change in the way they do business.  I am curious to see who on this list survives 2009.
